Person-centred therapy
Created in the 1950s by psychologist Carl Rogers, the person-centred approach sees humans as tending to develop towards their full potential. However, this ability can become blocked or distorted by certain life experiences, particularly those which affect our sense of value.
EMDR therapy
EMDR is an acronym for 'Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing'. EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment method that was developed by an American clinical psychologist, Dr Francine Shapiro, in the 1980s. As a Senior Research Fellow at the Mental Research Institute, she published the first research data to support the benefits of the therapy in 1989.
Since then a wealth of research has been conducted demonstrating its benefits in treating psychological trauma arising from experiences as diverse as war-related experiences, childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect, natural disasters, assault, surgical trauma, road traffic accidents and workplace accidents. Since its original development, EMDR has also been increasingly used to help individuals with other issues and performance anxiety. EMDR is of benefit to children as well as adults.
EMDR is a complex and powerful therapy. Therapists always have a background in mental health before undertaking training in EMDR. You are strongly recommended to only consult legitimate clinicians who have undergone a fide EMDR training.
DDP therapy
Dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP) is an attachment-focused therapy developed by Drs. Daniel Hughes and Arthur Becker-Weidman. It is an evidence-based treatment for complex trauma, reactive attachment issues (RAD), and other issues with attachment. It is often used to treat children in foster care and adoptive families, especially those who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect. DDP is a family-focused approach to therapy that incorporates well-researched principles such as a focus on relationships, attunement, intersubjectivity, and sensitive responsiveness.
Gottman Couples Therapy
The Gottman Method for Healthy Relationships is a form of couples-based therapy and education that derives from the relationship research of psychologist John Gottman. For more than 40 years, Gottman identified and tested the elements of an enduring relationship. Gottman and his wife, psychologist Julie Schwartz Gottman, created the clinical treatment framework known as the Gottman Method and launched the Gottman Institute, a centre for training, research, and education.
One of the major tenets of the Gottman Method is that couples require five times more positive interactions than negative ones, as negative emotions, like defensiveness and contempt, hurt a relationship more than positive ones heal. As a result, the therapy focuses on developing the skills and understanding necessary for partners to maintain fondness and admiration, turn toward each other to get their needs met, and manage conflict. It also focuses on how couples can react and repair relations when they do hurt each other.
Couple Counselling
Couples Counselling is a talking therapy where you can discuss your thoughts, feelings and behaviours within a relationship. It helps navigate through common mental health difficulties, such as low mood, anxiety and stress. It also allows an understanding of the impact of such difficulties on relationships and how they often affect the couple mental health.
